The internet started off in 1969 as a simple program to connect together a group of computers in a small office. Today, the whole world is seemingly connected together by technologies it would be hard to wrap our heads around, and so we refer to it as the internet.

1969- Birth of Internet.
1972- Introduction of email.
1973- Design of control panel/Internet protocol, useful in Internet connection.
1981- Development of disk operating system.
1984- Domain keys were launched. ex .com, .gov, .org.
1985- American online debut
1989- Tim Berners lee invents WWW.
1996- Internet was used by 45 million people.
1998- First office of search engine, Google, was set up.
2002- 544.2 million people used the Internet.
2005- You tube was launched.
2006- Number of websites 92 million.
2007- 1.114 billion people used the Internet.

The birth of the internet took place in 1969, but it wasn’t until 1989 that the concept of the World Wide Web was introduced. Today, 92 Million websites were now on the internet.

The top three websites today, according to web traffic, are, Google, Facebook and Youtube. Twitter and MySpace land at numbers 11 and 19, respectively.

The first web browser was solely text based, and used a command line interface to function, where every function was carried out by entering a command already programmed into the browser. Today we have multiple web browsers with capabilities to view images, videos and play sounds.

By 1996, 45 million people were using the internet.

Google’s first office was set up in 1998. Today Google owns up to half the services that people use on the internet. Starting with a search engine, Google has ventured to voice over ip, email, and web browsers. Google also purchased Youtube in the not so far past. They’ve come up with cell phones, and pretty soon they’re launching their own line of hardware – Google Chrome laptops.

Youtube was launched in 2005. Today, YouTube is the second largest search engine on the web, followed by engines like Yahoo and Bing.

50% of YouTube’s 300 million users visit Youtube at least once a week.

3.5 billion pieces of content are shared each week on facebook.

Facebook usage is up 40% since last year.

The average user on facebook has 120 friends.

65 million million facebook users access the site through their mobile phones. That’s up 100% in the last 6 months.

There are over 70 translations available for facebook.

2.5 billion photos are uploaded to facebook each month.

An estimated 10,000 servers run Facebook’s infrastructure.

Facebook has become so popular, psychologists identified a new mental health disorder called Facebook Addiction Disorder.

So far this year, there are over 30 million tweets a day.

Twitter adds approximately 300,000 users a day.

Twitter just celebrated a 100 million new accounts in 2010.

The Internet has also forever changed the way the NEWS is broadcasted and viewed in today’s world. Headlines from news websites are received on cell phones, and people skim through them using RSS feed readers while sipping on their coffees in the morning.

It’s not only the way news is delivered, but also how it is reported that has changed. Blogging is at an all time high, with bloggers classifying themselves as ‘journalists’ when given a wide variety of words to choose from. With so many sources on the internet for information, it can be a tough job to pick and decide what is liable and integral, and what is not.

Anyone with a cell phone camera and a Blogger account can be put in charge of providing the world with headlines, and you wouldn’t know the difference.
